How the building was named
Stanley Melbourne Bruce (1883–1967) was Prime Minister of Australia and Minister for External Affairs when the decision was taken to move the seat of government from Melbourne to Canberra, following which the move for a national university began. Bruce was Australian High Commissioner in Great Britain from 1933 to 1945 and served as the Australian National University’s first Chancellor from 1951 to 1961, when Bruce Hall was founded. He was created a viscount in 1947.
